Proposed Youth Summer Camp

6/14/2015 update: We did not have enough interest for the Summer Camp this year, as we didn’t publicize it early enough to get on parents’ schedules. We will assess again next year and try to set it up far enough in advance to get on parents’ calendars. Thanks for those who expressed an interest.

We are trying to assess interest. If you are interested in having your child attend, please e-mail the dojo at tcaikido@yahoo.com or call the dojo at (651) 644-3360 and leave a message for Kathy. Please include your contact information, your child’s name and the dates you are interested in.

The purpose of Aikido Camp is to give our students concentrated time on the mat to help them learn and understand the movements, learn to work together, and have some fun. It would include continuing and new students. They would learn about the sempai and cohai system of working together to enhance their learning. We would need a minimum of six students for each week of the camp.

The Camp I times would be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 am to 10 am, from June 15 through July 3. Camp II times would be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday also from 9 am to 10 am, from July 6 through July 24. So each camp would be a total of three weeks, three days a week for a total of nine classes. The cost would be $15 per week.
The curriculum would include:

  • Rolls and falls
    • Work on Kaiten rolls and falls
    • Introduce ways to avoid an attack
    • End the three week sessions using Juu-waza techniques – multiple attackers
  • Emphasize focus with partners
    • How to be aware of your partner as nage and uke – be engaged
    • Move with your partner to help each other learn techniques – be engaged
    • Know when nage has uke’s balance – be engaged
  • Emphasize control of techniques
    • Learn many kokyu-ho techniques
    • Understand the use of Juu-waza
